Hi there,

I am wondering if someone can provide a detailed definition of 'balanced protein energy supplementation', and even better, some information on how the term was formed.

Kramer and Kakuma's Cochrane reviews (updated by Ota and colleagues, 2012) define balanced protein energy supplementation 'as supplementation in which the protein provides less than 25% of its total energy content'. Imdad and Bhutta's systematic review provides the same definition, though with the additional information: ' a macronutrient food supplement'.

If protein is to provide less than 25% of the total energy content, what is the minimum energy to be provided from protein?

Thank you!!
