Role & Responsibilities
Develop, lead, monitor and evaluate the assigned nutrition project(s), effectively managing and reporting on the projects in line with the objectives, time frame and budget with a focus on nutrition system strengthening, training and coordination. Provide leadership, strategic direction and technical support, manage and capacity build Nutrition Managers in meeting quality standards in nutrition service delivery, behaviour change communication and project cycle management, encourage beneficiary participation, and liaise and coordinate with external stakeholders. Anticipate, plan, and contribute to the development of new nutrition and/or related project proposals and reports.

Project Overview
The Afghanistan programme has projects in Nutrition, Food Assistance, Food Security, WASH, Natural Resource Management and Emergency Response. All projects contribute to the overall objective of increased resilience and contain Disaster Risk Management elements.

Key Activity Areas
Nutrition Project Management
• Provide strong leadership and overall management of the assigned nutrition project(s), working to ensure both short and long-term positive impacts and outcomes for the beneficiaries, local nutrition authorities (where applicable) and local nutrition staff.
• Contribute to development and implementation of an appropriate and effective nutrition strategy, including proactive planning for responsible exit in consultation with country nutrition advisor, other nutrition staff and field managers.
• Set clear objectives and indicators for nutrition activities, in collaboration with the country nutrition advisor, nutrition staff, field managers and, where appropriate, with the local communities.
• Continuously monitor and supervise nutrition activities, evaluating progress through outputs and impacts using both quantitative and qualitative data, and involving the nutrition team (and where applicable local health authorities) in analysis and taking appropriate action as needed to ensure continued progress.
• Contribute to accurate and timely analysis and reporting of nutrition activities and outcomes according to Medair, donor and other applicable time frames and formats
• Work closely with other sectors relevant to the project(s) in order to achieve seamless integration in implementation and results.

Staff Management
• Line-manage the Nutrition Managers, including day-to-day management, development and training, appraisals, etc. It may also be necessary at times to line manage other nutrition project staff including supervisors and nurses.
• Facilitate regular meetings to assist information sharing between project staff, ensuring staff members are aware of project objectives and current work plans and to provide the opportunity for feedback.
• Provide coaching and technical supervision of Nutrition Managers, as well as capacity build them in project cycle and budget management, in order to develop ownership and greater responsibility for nutrition activities.
• Assess the training needs of nutrition staff and ensure that appropriate training is conducted.

Financial Management
• Manage the nutrition budget for the assigned project(s) and ensure all expenses are according to budget and meet the Medair standards with regard to financial management, including accountability and good governance.

Communication and Coordination
• Participate in nutrition coordination meetings, Medair internal trainings, and other working groups or meetings as required, representing Medair and feeding back to the nutrition staff and field managers on relevant issues.

• Support and plan the logistics activities of nutrition programming, particularly in relation to the purchasing of medicines, supplies and equipment for the assigned nutrition facilities and activities and monitoring for sufficient buffer stock.

Quality Management
• Ensure nutrition projects are implemented in line with donor proposals and requirements and in accordance with Medair, donor, country and international standards i.e. Sphere and HAP standards.

Field - Team Spiritual Life
• Reflect the vision and values of Medair with team members, local staff, beneficiaries, and external contacts.
• Fully contribute to the rich spiritual life of your team, including team devotions, prayers, and words of encouragement.
• Live, work and pray together in our Christian faith-based team settings.
• Instigate and contribute to prayer times within internationally recruited staff and HQ teams.

This job description covers the main tasks and conveys the spirit of the sort of tasks that are anticipated proactively from staff. Other tasks may be assigned as necessary according to organisational needs.

• Higher level qualification, preferably in nutrition or in another relevant field such as doctor, nursing, or public health specialist

• Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written)

Experience / Competencies
• 2 years post-qualification professional experience in a relevant field
• 1 year experience working in a nutrition / health programme in a developing country, preferably in a humanitarian context; nutrition programme management experience desirable
• Experience in the design, monitoring of implementation and evaluation of CMAM programmes; Experience working in an insecure environment desirable
• Knowledge and experience of nutrition / primary health care principles (including behaviour change communication / IYCF) and management
• Knowledge of humanitarian principles, Sphere and HAP Standards and other international humanitarian guidelines and protocols
• Experience in training / mentoring / coaching staff; aptitude for community mobilisation and capacity-building; team-player with good inter-personal skills
• Creative, open-minded, flexible, self-learner
• Ability to cope with basic living conditions in the field and during field trips

Relief experience
• Professionals with 12 months or more relevant relief or development experience (Experienced Relief Workers).
• Professionals with less than 12 months relevant relief or development experience (New Relief Workers).
• Experienced professionals in a relevant Medair sector of expertise.
• Overseas intercultural experience.

Personal qualities
• Able to live and work in a multicultural team under difficult conditions.
• Strong character traits, including emotional stability, adaptability, ability to handle stress, cultural and gender sensitivity, honesty, and physically fit.

Working Conditions
• This is a field position and working and living conditions may be very different to that previously experienced. This position will have very restricted movements at the field base. Access to projects sites will also be limited.
