Dear Experts,

An expert opinion is requested related to Micro-Nutrient Sachet for SAM children. Can we give MNP Sachet to SAM children? if not than why and what will be the consequences if given 45 sachets for 45 days with frequency of once a day.

Regards

This is when there is no RUTF. Only Micro-Nutrients powder available.

Micro nutrient powders are not the product of choice for SAM children. However I am aware that in contexts where RUTF is not used for a variety of reasons a strategy of promotion of high energy dense porridge/ home cooked foods to which MNP is added has been used. There is limited evidence that this works vis a vis what is well known as the CMAM approach using RUTF equivalent to F100.

The presence of Fe in the MNP is also a matter of concern without the mandatory antibiotic dose in the 1st week of SAM treatment.
