Is the borehole water grouped as safe water or does it need to be treated first to become safe.

In brief, water from protected boreholes can be microbiologically safe, however chemicals might be problematic (arsenic, various salts) so this needs to be checked. Also, where water from a borehole is safe both biologically and chemically, there are chances for secondary contamination at transport or household level. This is why in particular in certain situations (water trucking, disease outbreak, camp...) we typically chlorinate.
