Causes of Kwashiorkhor ?

Have there been any new research done on the causes of kwashiorkhor , most of the people still think that it is due to a lack of proteins which was denied a while ago and I stayed with the theory of the aflatoxins or free radicals theory ? Have there been any theory proven ? Thanks a lot for your help,
