After working as the Planning Officer for the Government of Botswana's National Drought Relief in the early 1980's, I have devoted the last 25 years to research, evaluation, networking and capacity development within the field of international disaster mitigation and humanitarian action.

From 1991 to 2002 I was a Research Fellow at the Overseas Development Institute in London. During this period I established and led (in 1993-94) the ODI Relief and Rehabilitation Network (now Humanitarian Practice Network), led (in 1995-96) Study III of the Joint Evaluation of Emergency Assistance to Rwanda (JEEAR), established (in 1997) the Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance in Humanitarian Action (ALNAP) and served as Co-ordinator for its first five years.

Since leaving ALNAP and ODI in March 2002 I have been working as an independent consultant in the humanitarian sector. This period has included:
. 7 months as Project Director of the ALNAP Learning Support Office pilot project in Malawi (2002-03);
. Co-evaluator of the ACT Alliance (2003-04);
. Team Leader of a multi-agency collaborative evaluation process (led by SIDA) synthesising evaluations of support to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)
. A four year involvement as Learning Support Adviser to the ACT/Caritas Darfur Emergency Response Operation (2004 - ongoing);
. Facilitation and support to a 20-month process within the ACT Alliance to develop and rollout a Global Capacity Development Initiative (July 2006 - March 2008)
. Leading a process on behalf of ALNAP to explore the feasibility of creating a mechanism for assessing and reporting on the overall performance of the humanitarian system (November 2007 - October 2008)

During early 2009 I will be preparing papers for the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership (HAP) and the Humanitarian Horizons Project jointly managed by Tufts University, Boston and Kings College, London.
