Hello All

What the method we use to dispose expired RUTF\RUSF? Do we use incineration to dispose them?

Is there any manual for this process?

Hi Anonymous,

As far as i know there is no manual recomending methods for disposal of used or unused RUTF/ RUSF. In a survey in 2018 UNICEF found there was no clear strategy among suppliers / users for disposal of packaging https://www.unicef.org/supply/media/4776/file/0900-Greening-Blue-take2-SustainableProcurement-RUTF-June2018.pdf  A quick review of references on google mostly suggest the packaging is often incinerated, although one source also suggeted disposal in a latrine. I couldnt find any references on the safe disposal of batches of unused expired product. In short this is a gap in the guidance.

At present it doesnt appear that there is an alternative environmentally friendly packaging that is economically viable although UNICEF and Nutriset indicate they are looking into modifications in packaging as part of the overall life cycle of these products ot reduce the environmental impact.

This interesting article by ALIMA cites the recycling of RUTF packaging where 100kg of wasted packaging is converted ot 19L of fuel which is then used for other purposes. Similar initiatives are being explored to convert the used packaging into briquettes for contruction purposes.  https://alima.ngo/en/news/burkina-faso-plastik-project/

Hi Anon,
In the current low resource environment, one of the key strategies should be for us to try our very best to not reach this stage. It's good to keep the expiry dates at the back of our mind and if we realize it will not be possible to distribute/ use all before that date, then let's reach out to MOH or other partners in the area and country to see how best we can coordinate and avoid such losses.
Glad you had fewer cases than expected and best of luck!
