We are pleased to share three newly published resources from UNICEF, IFE Core Group and Save the Children. These tools aim to support the implementation and scale-up of wet nursing in emergency settings and should be disseminated widely among relevant teams and colleagues.
The three newly published resources are:
- Technical and Operational Guidance for Increasing Access to Breastmilk through Wet Nursing in Emergency Settings – developed by UNICEF, with the support of the IFE Core Group.
- Wet Nursing Screening Tool – developed by Save the Children to support safe and appropriate identification and support of wet nurses.
- Infographic #7: Supporting Wet Nursing during Emergencies – developed by the IFE Core Group, this simple tool provides practical guidance for frontline workers during emergency preparedness and response.
We encourage you to use these tools in your programs and emergency response efforts, and to disseminate these resources widely!
On a related note, the IFE Core Group is gathering case studies on wet nursing in emergency contexts. If you, or someone you know, has any experiences/examples/case studies supporting wet nursing for infants and young children from birth to 2 years of age or even older in emergencies, please email us at ife@ennonline.net so that we can connect. Thank you!
If you have any questions or feedback on the use of these resources in your context, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your continued commitment to protecting and promoting infant and young child feeding in emergencies.
Note on wet nursing: Breastfeeding of a child by someone other than the child’s mother
